The hockey world was watching. Young Kaapo Kakko knew it. Perhaps it’s why he waited until Tuesday night to tally two goals, one of which represented an overtime winner.
Rookie Adam Fox found Kakko at the 2:24 mark of overtime to give the New York Rangers a 3-2 victory over the rival Pittsburgh Penguins at Madison Square Garden.

Kakko, 18, was the man responsible for starting the party on this NBC Sports night. His breakaway goal at the 6:42 mark of the first period put the Blueshirts up 1-0.

The No. 2 overall pick finished with two goals on three shots in 16:38 minutes of ice time. Alongside him all night was the man who set up the game-winner, Fox.

The rookie defenseman up the Rangers up 2-0 later in the first. A beauty of a shot helped Fox to a stat line of a goal, an assist and a +1 on the night.

Pittsburgh pushed back in the second period. Justin Schultz and Jared McCann both lit the lamp and it’s where the game remained until the Kakko winner.

Alexandar Georgiev picked up the victory after stopping 30-of-32 shots. On the other side, Matt Murray takes the loss, allowing three of his 27 shots faced get by.
The Rangers, having won five of their last seven, will head down to Florida for a matchup with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night. It’ll be the first of two contests in the Sunshine State (Florida Panthers, Saturday night).
