Rookie sensation Pete Alonso will represent the New York Mets on the big stage during All-Star break festivities.
New York Mets fans have something to cheer about. According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Pete Alonso has been asked to participate in this year’s Home Run Derby and the rookie first baseman will accept.
Alonso is second in the majors with 27 home runs, trailing only Christian Yelich of the Milwaukee Brewers. He has been one of the few bright spots for the Mets this season.
Prior to the season, there was some speculation that the Mets would hold Alonso down in Triple-A to manipulate his service time. Thankfully, the team decided to make Alonso the everyday first baseman and he hasn’t looked back.
In fact, Alonso could be heading to Cleveland for more than just the Home Run Derby. Although there is stiff competition at first base in the National League, Alonso’s numbers hold up against anyone’s.
The 24-year-old has 27 home runs, 61 RBIs, and 52 runs. Not to mention, he’s slashing a ridiculous .277/.367/.625. He’s the clear frontrunner to win NL Rookie of the Year despite the early challenge from Chris Paddack of the San Diego Padres.
In addition to Alonso, Jeff McNeil and Jacob deGrom have strong cases to make the All-Star Game. McNeil is second in the majors in batting average with a remarkable .346 average. He picked up right where he left off in 2018. Although deGrom has not been as dominant as he was during his Cy Young run last season, he’s still having an All-Star worthy season.
Regardless, the Mets will have some representation in Cleveland during the All-Star break.
