New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist recognizes important moments in team history.

This Friday night is no exception. Hank announced through twitter a new mask he will wear as the organization celebrates the 25th anniversary of the team’s last Stanley Cup championship.

A tribute to Rangers goaltender Mike Richter, Henrik understands the honor relating to playing for an original six hockey club. This mask clearly represents the respect he has for the Rangers Stanley Cup legend.

The mask has the vintage lady liberty on the top, a trademark of the one Richter wore throughout most of his career and during the ‘94 season, while the left side has the word “Rangers” in white lettering.

The right side showcases “1994” in red with white trimming. On top of 1994 is a beautiful portrait of Richter and a vintage shot of Mike standing in goal.

To end the beautiful detail work on the back of the mask is a picture of the New York City skyline with the words “ The Heart Of USA”.

The mask was designed by Henrik and David Gunnarsson.

Gunnarsson has been creating all of the masks Lundqvist has worn in the NHL and in international games including the Olympics. The detail he puts on all of the masks he creates is second to none. You can see the pureness in his work. It translates from an idea to paper to the mask itself.

Richter, the champion, represents everything Lundqvist inspires to be. Aside from reaching the top milestone, a Stanley Cup, Lundqvist has represented the Rangers just as well as Richter did when he put the pads on for the Blueshirts.

The mask is a touching tribute from a player who recognizes the importance of playing for an original six franchise in one of the best hockey towns in the NHL.
