Rebuild? Who needs a stinking rebuild? New York Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen labels his club the NL East favorites.

Rebuild? Who needs a stinking rebuild? Not the New York Mets—this much is certain.

After acquiring four pieces—Edwin Diaz, Robinson Cano, Jeurys Familia and Wilson Ramos—young Brodie Van Wagenen is already feeling his oats. He’s already throwing his club in there as the NL East favorites for the 2019 MLB season, via SNY.

“Internally, we would argue that we’re the favorites in the division right now,” Van Wagenen told the team’s SNY network.

For a club that many believed would be on the rebuilding fast-track, it’s an interesting comment.

Ramos, the Mets newest addition and fresh backstop, was the topic of Tuesday. The organization unveiled its new prize and the young general manager immediately noticed.

“It was his handshake,” new general manager Brodie Van Wagenen recalled Tuesday at the catcher’s introductory news conference. “As some of you may get to know, this guy has really big, strong, strong mitts here for hands.”

Speaking of Ramos, he’s already sent a personal message to all of Flushing.

There’s no question New York has upped its talent base. Despite young Jared Kelenic now in Seattle, the acquisitions of a professional hitter (Cano), a dominant closer (Diaz), a very nice setup man (Familia), and steady catcher (Ramos), have this team much better on paper at the moment.

Should the starting pitching remain healthy, perhaps Van Wagenen’s talk turns into reality. Only time will tell.
