There he was, Jimmy Vesey, with an entire hard-fought 65 minutes of hockey on his back. There he was, as the fifth shooter of the shootout in Columbus on Saturday night with the hopes and dreams of a possible over-.500 hockey club on his shoulders.
He delivered.
His glove-side shot hit the back of the net, ensuring a 5-4 New York Rangers victory over John Tortorella’s Blue Jackets.

New York was in line to win the shootout in Round 3 after Kevin Shattenkirk and Mika Zibanejad both score, but it was not to be. Vesey hammered the game-winner home two rounds later.
Regulation was an old-school goal-scoring affair. Speaking of Zibs, the team’s top-line center tallied his seventh of the season just 5:54 into the first frame. Pavel Buchnevich’s sick toe-drag assist made it happen.
Worth another look.

After Cam Atkinson tied it up on the power-play at the end of the first, Buchenvich and Chris Kreider both struck in the first half of the second. Just like the first goal, again, the Rangers found the back of the net at even strength.

As per usual, that dreaded two-goal lead didn’t last. In fact, Columbus tallied the next three to take a one-goal lead.
Vesey’s sixth goal of the season, coming with under a minute to go in the third period, off a beautiful feed by Kevin Hayes, tied the game at four apiece. That’s where we stood until the shootout.

Alexandar Georgiev picked the victory while stopping 38 Blue Jackets shots. New York is 5-0-1 and have recorded 11 points of a possible 12 over its last six hockey games.
Now sitting as a winning NHL hockey club at 8-7-2, the Rangers will take a blow before taking on the Vancouver Canucks at Madison Square Garden on Monday night.
