New York Knicks legend Patrick Ewing drops a nostalgic message for his longtime running partner, rebounding machine Charles Oakley.

“We are the New York Knicks.” That one bar is all that’s needed for the Knickerbocker fan familiar with the decade of the 1990s to get out of his/her chair and go nuts.

Some of the most beloved teams in organizational history hustled their way to everybody’s hearts during that special decade, and there’s no question as to who the leaders were.

Obviously, Patrick Ewing was the top dog, but he had help. Charles Oakley was the second-half of the captaincy and a rebounding and defensive machine who always had Ewing’s back.

On Thursday, Ewing, now the head coach at Georgetown, expressed a nostalgic feel when he saw a photo of himself guarding the Oak-man while he was with the Toronto Raptors.

“Never felt right either. You always had my back, Oak.”

In fact, it was Oakley who got it started by posting the photo himself.

Not everybody understands. Even in New York, there are fans who can’t quite grasp why those Ewing-led teams mean so much to the Knicks fan. But it’s actually quite simple.

Sure, a great argument can be made that they always overachieved. Think about it. Ewing was, by far, the only hall of famer on the squad. John Starks was a nice player, as was Oakley, but neither approach legend status. This coupled with the horrid fact that the franchise has been in dire straits since is the reason for such love.

If only it was 1994 again.
