New York Islanders freshman Mathew Barzal continues to have an amazing season as he was named NHL Rookie of the Month for January.

New York Islanders center Mathew Barzal keeps impressing his teammates and the National Hockey League with his stellar play. It’s why the phenom has now been named the NHL Rookie of the Month for January.

Barzal registered three goals and 12 assists for 15 points in 13 games. For the season, Barzal’s tallied16 goals and 35 assists for 51 points in 52 games played and is averaging 17:08 time on ice this season.

In addition, the kid’s also picked up at least one point in eight of the 13 games played in January. His best performance of the month was against the Islanders cross-town rival New York Rangers, a game that saw him register a five-point night ( two goals and three assists). This was Barzal’s second five-point game of the season. The first time came against the Colorado Avalanche on Nov. 5 (five assists).

Among the players Barzal beat out for Rookie of the Month was teammate Ryan Pulock who recorded two goals and six assists for eight points in 13 games played. Other players who Barzal beat out were  Tampa Bay Lightning center Yanni Gourde, Pittsburgh Penguins center Dominik Simon, and Chicago Blackhawks right wing Alex DeBrincat.

Barzal, born in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada, was the New York Islanders first round pick (16th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. Barzal appeared in two games for the Islanders in the 2016-17 season, registering no points.

Barzal will look to continue his great season when he and his New York Islanders host the Columbus Blue Jackets in Brooklyn on Saturday night.
