The New York Islanders traded goals with the Detroit Red Wings but ultimately fell short in the third period.

For two periods these teams were evenly matched, but the Islanders were completely outclassed by the Red Wings in the third period. Midway through the period, Trevor Daley scored what proved to be the game-winning goal. Mike Green and Luke Glendening added goals of their own to solidify the win.

The Islanders had their chance to take control in the second period after a Josh Bailey power play goal coming off of a nifty between the legs play from rookie sensation Mat Barzal. The 20-year old was definitely looking to score but after a fortunate bounce, Josh Bailey hammered the puck into the open net. This was the Islanders second power-play goal of the night and the Isles were 2 of 3 with the man advantage.

This was a see-saw affair, but it was only a matter of time before one team took control. The Islanders have faltered of late and this is a game that they needed to win. Today was an exciting day for Islanders fans because of the news that the team will be moving to Belmont Park. This loss will definitely put a damper on that excitement.

The fight to make the playoffs is likely to be very crowded in the East. It’s tough to lose these games against teams they should be beating, especially at home. This was the second game of a crucial five-game homestand for the Islanders. With the Ducks, Jets, and Sabres coming to Brooklyn, fans are expecting at least four more points.
