Carmelo Anthony returns to Madison Square Garden to a mixed reaction

Former New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony received a mixed reaction from the crowd in his first game back at Madison Square Garden.

Carmelo Anthony always got a reaction out of Knicks fans one way or another. He was always the player that every New Yorker loved or hated. There seems like there’s no in between. The Knicks made a very classy gesture with Anthony’s pregame tribute video and his introduction.

The reaction from the crowd when his name was called was definitely a mixed reaction. Although some fans were initially cheering for Melo, that tone is changing early. Many in the Madison Square Garden crowd began booing loudly every time he touched the ball. Polarizing while he was a Knick, but now he’s on the enemy team.

One thing about Carmelo Anthony that you can never doubt was his desire to be the guy. He wanted to come to New York to bring a championship to the city, but he never could quite get there. Knicks fans should respect him for at least accepting the challenge.

The video tribute was a nice thing to do for the guy who was your franchise player for seven years. Despite the fact that he could never get the Knicks over the hump, he was always willing to be the guy, take the big shots, and answer the tough questions.

That being said, the Knicks are officially moving on to a new chapter. A win against Melo and the Thunder tonight would be the cherry on top of what looks like a great trade for the Knicks.

The biggest disappointment tonight is that Kristaps Porzingis is out with a sore knee and won’t be able to face off with his former mentor. Anthony has passed the baton of franchise player to Kristaps Porzingis. Maybe one day he’ll be able to do what Melo always wanted to: bring a championship to New York.
