After a press session that can only be described as unique, this mundane New York Mets day will be remembered as the “Sunday of Sandy.”
To say Sunday was interesting would be an understatement. Not because the New York Mets made a groundbreaking free agent signing, but because their fearless leader, Sandy Alderson, made some interesting comments in regard to the team and upcoming 2018 season.
In addition to informing us of his nonexistent expectations for Michael Conforto to be ready for Opening Day and that Asdrubal Cabrera has “zeroed in” on the third base spot, Alderson left us with some interesting takeaways. Thanks to the New York Post’s Mike Puma, we had a first-hand look at the “Sunday of Sandy.”
Alderson on trade possibilities: "Our minor league system right now is not brimming with prospects."

This veteran GM knows exactly how to instill organizational confidence in the farm system.
Alderson: "With Brandon Nimmo in right field you think we need Stanton?"
— Mike Puma (@NYPost_Mets) December 10, 2017
He’s absolutely right. Who needs the National League MVP when you have a player with six career home runs.
Alderson says the Mets will be looking for "value" in the relief market. Won't "jump into the inferno."
— Mike Puma (@NYPost_Mets) December 10, 2017
I did not realize that we had to distinguish between looking for value and not looking for it. Who are we kidding? The penny counting Mets are always looking for a bargain.
I slightly messed up the Sandy Alderson quote earlier on why the Mets didn't pursue Stanton. The exact quote was: "With Brandon Nimmo in right field, we just didn't feel that we had a need there."
— Mike Puma (@NYPost_Mets) December 10, 2017
Wait. This makes a lot more sense.
Alderson on bullpen market: "We are not going to chase players. There are a lot of guys out there."
— Mike Puma (@NYPost_Mets) December 10, 2017
Who wouldn’t be happy with taking the players everybody doesn’t want?
Alderson said adding another starting pitcher would be a fourth priority on a list of three.
— Mike Puma (@NYPost_Mets) December 10, 2017
More like fourth priority on an infinite list.
Alderson also softened his tone on Dominic Smith, says the Mets are "very high" on the rookie first baseman.
— Mike Puma (@NYPost_Mets) December 11, 2017
If criticizing someone’s weight is considered being “high” on them, then yes, Alderson is “high” on Smith.
