New York Knicks: Kristaps Porzingis suffers nasty ankle injury vs. Heat (Video)

New York Knicks superstar Kristaps Porzingis turned his ankle early in the first quarter and it did not look good.

Porzingis was off to a great start after knocking down his first two jumpers. On both plays, he came off of a low screen, curled towards the elbow, and nailed the shot with a hand in his face. The Garden was buzzing and this game had all the feel of a 30+ point game for the Unicorn.

Then disaster struck. Justise Winslow and Porzingis get tangled up in the corner and Porzingis hits the deck. He immediately grabbed the ankle. Every Knick fan’s heart dropped simultaneously. Willy Hernangomez helped Porzingis into the locker room and Knick fans weren’t sure what news to expect. The injury looked especially bad in slo-mo.

Expectations coming into the season were low, but a hot start has had the Garden buzzing. Knicks fans can live through another mediocre season. We’ve done it before. But it’s going to be hard for Knicks fans to live through a really bad season without Porzingis. Even if they’re losing games, Knicks fans can take solace in the fact that the future is bright.

As bad as the injury looked, the X-Rays were negative and Porzingis is clear to return tonight. That first quarter may have been the most nervous Knicks fans have been all year. We can only hope that this doesn’t happen again. Losing Porzingis for an extended period of time would be the ultimate nightmare scenario for Knicks fans.

The Knicks are currently ahead in the 2nd quarter and fans in the Garden are still awaiting Porzingis’ return. You can bet that he will be getting a large ovation from the home crowd when he makes his way out of the locker room. Let’s just hope we don’t have to go through this again.
