Josh McCown has been named the starting quarterback for the New York Jets for the season opener.

Monday, the New York Jets announced that Josh McCown will be their starting quarterback in Week 1 when they take on the Buffalo Bills at New Era Stadium.

McCown beat out Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty for the job. Hackenberg was McCown’s biggest threat for the job, but the Penn State product turned 22 preseason possessions into just nine points.

“He gives us the best chance to win right now,” Jets coach Todd Bowles told reporters, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “He has the best grasp of the offense right now. The other two have gotten significantly better, but he has the best grasp right now.”

As Cimini notes, McCown will be the team’s fourth different starting quarterback in the last six years, following in the footsteps of Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith, and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

“I’m just humbled for this opportunity and I look forward to making the most of it,” McCown told reporters after the announcement.

McCown has gone 18-42 as a starting QB over his 15-year career, throwing 79 touchdowns and 69 interceptions. He’s only started more than 10 games in a season twice, most recently with Tampa Bay in 2014.
