New York Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello takes home his third Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award during this very special year.

This is, without a doubt, the most special Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award handed out to date. We know this because the greatest New York Rangers fan in the world passed away earlier in the season, thus adding more meaning into this season’s award.

Mats Zuccarello is that lucky man who skates away with the award, as presented at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night prior to the team’s regular season finale against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

This is Zuc’s third time winning the award, his second straight and third in the last four years. He now trails the all-time leader, Adam Graves, by two awards.

In addition to the winner, the Garden and organization paid a special tribute to their fallen hero:

The Rangers and Penguins are currently skating to finish out the season.
