Sometimes the hockey gods don’t smile down upon you. This is why no team in the NHL can ever finish with a perfect 82-0 record — no matter the personnel or circumstance.

At Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night, the New York Rangers felt the wrath of the hockey gods when Antti Raanta was forced to leave his net in the third period due to a league-mandated “concussion check.” After being collided with earlier in the frame, trainer Jim Ramsey was tasked with taking Raanta out.

In came a cold Henrik Lundqvist who proceeded to relent two goals en route to a 4-2 loss at the hands of the Vancouver Canucks.

It was a close one throughout. Young Pavel Buchnevich put the Blueshirts on the board first in the second period with this third goal in as many games:

The other Rangers goal-scorer on the night was Rick Nash who collected his 400th career goal on the power play. It knotted the game at two apiece.

But on this night, Vancouver was just too much. A trio of Canucks tallied their first goals of the season on this night (Loui Eriksson, Alex Burrows, and Sven Baertschi). Henrik Sedin scored the other critical Canuck goal, the one in the second period that provided them with their first lead of the night.

Burrows added an empty-net goal while Mika Zibanejad netted one with just over a minute to play.

The Rangers now slide to a record of 10-4 on the season. Next up will be a four-game road trip beginning in Calgary on Saturday night.
