Mats Zuccarello‘s two goals weren’t enough to propel the New York Rangers past Jeff Skinner and the Carolina Hurricanes.

  • Carolina Hurricanes 3 (2-3-2, 6 pts)

Friday night’s matchup between the New York Rangers and the Carolina Hurricanes can be boiled down to the Jeff Skinner and Mats Zuccarello show.

The Norwegian forward scored New York’s only two goals. First, he capitalized on a wild scramble in front of Cam Ward on a power-play:

After scoring the first goal of the night, Zuccarello tied the game at two apiece in the second period as he found himself on a breakaway thanks to a Ryan McDonagh two-line pass:

Unfortunately for Alain Vigneault, it wasn’t enough on this night.

With just 0.3 seconds to go in the second period, it looked as if Skinner collected his third goal of the night, as the free giveaway (hats) were appropriately thrown to the ice. Although the goal was, instead, awarded to Bryan Bickell, Skinner’s impact had already been made as he scored the Canes first two goals.

Henrik Lundqvist was only forced to make 18 total saves of the 21 shots he faced. Ward stopped 28 of the 30 he was tasked with.

3 Stars of the Night:

  1. J. Skinner (Hurricanes – LW): Goals: 2, Assists: 1
  2. C. Ward (Hurricanes – G): Saves: 28, Save Pct.: .933
  3. V. Rask (Hurricanes – C): Goals: 0, Assists: 2

Next up for the Rangers will be a date with the Tampa Bay Lightning at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night.
