The latest report that the New York Rangers are shopping Dylan McIlrath should not come as a surprise.

It appears that Dylan McIlrath’s time in New York is over.

According to Larry Brooks of the NY Post, Jeff Gorton is believed to be shopping the 24-year-old. The former Blueshirts’ first round pick had an auspicious first year in the Big Apple, but never seemed to gain the trust of Alain Vigneault.

McIlrath was expected to come into training camp and fight for a spot on the roster with Nick Holden and 23-year-old Adam Clendening. During the preseason, however, McIlrath reverted back to his same old habits of poor positioning, footwork, and erratic physical play which forced him onto the bench in his rookie year.

It will be very interesting to see what type of return the Blueshirts would be able to get for the hard-nosed righty. He has a hard shot from the point and certainly isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty, but it would be foolish to expect a big package in exchange for a guy who isn’t anything more than a potential third-pair defenseman.

This news also means that Adam Clendening’s roster spot is pretty much set in stone. The former Edmonton Oiler has looked very sharp. His ability to move the puck and move up and down the ice plays right into AV’s system.

This is the right move for the Blueshirts going forward.
