After a 2016 season where the playoffs currently look unlikely for the New York Yankees, we take a look at some potential trades for the offseason.

The New York Yankees have accomplished success in 2016 that was, for the most part, impossible in most fans’ minds after trading many of their top stars at the trade deadline.

What about the hot stove, though? Despite what the Bombers may or may not due the rest of 2016, the offseason will loom large.

Over the past few offseasons, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has made deals that many fans questioned at first, but turned out to be monumental successes.

Some of these deals led to players like Didi Gregorius, Starlin Castro, and Aroldis Chapman. All of these trades were ones that involved the Yankees buying low on the player to only see the player displaying a huge impact on the team the following season.

The Bombers have many potential trade candidates, especially thanks to the past trade deadline’s moves.

Here are a few trades Cash and the Yanks could execute this offseason:

Chris Sale acquired by the New York Yankees in exchange for Jorge Mateo, James Kaprielian, Dustin Fowler, and Rob Refsnyder.

If a trade like this were to happen, it would be one of the biggest blockbusters to take place over the past decade. Chris Sale is arguably one of the best pitchers in all of Major League Baseball and would be a huge component to any team he would be a part of.

The basis for this trade would be the fact that Sale is unhappy in his current surroundings in Chicago. The Yankees are also looking for starting pitching so it seems like a fit for both sides.

Sale had an incident with the White Sox organization in July when he cut up the team’s throwback jerseys in protest of his feelings that the organization cared more about revenue and jersey sales rather than actually winning games.

Sale wouldn’t have this issue in New York, especially considering there aren’t any Yankees throwbacks.

Headed to Chicago would be a bevy of prospects.

They would be receiving three of the Yankees top 15 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline. The highly touted Jorge Mateo would have to be included.

Mateo and the Yankees had an issue prior to the All-Star break earlier this season when he received a suspension for questioning his lack of promotion. It may not seem like a big deal, but with Gleyber Torres ready to take over the shortstop position in the future, this could be the perfect scenario for the Yankees to trade one of their shortstop prospects and receive a huge return that could help them win now.

The White Sox would also be taking on James Kaprielian, Dustin Fowler, and Rob Refsnyder.

The Yanks get their lefty while the Sox begin the rebuild.

Brian McCann, Jake Cave, and Cash acquired by the Atlanta Braves in exchange for Touki Toussaint, Lucas Sims, and A.J. Minter

This would be another trade on the list that would provide the Yankees with pitching, something they’ll need to improve.

The deal would send Brian McCann, Jake Cave and cash to Atlanta. McCann has a no-trade clause, but many expect that he would be willing to waive it in a trade to Atlanta, mainly because he lives there.

The Braves have been looking for a catcher, and one of the only top catchers out there on the trade market is the former Brave himself, Brian McCann. The trade would be a perfect scenario for both sides involved. The Braves would receive an All-Star caliber catcher along with a great outfield prospect. The Yankees would be getting three stellar pitching prospects.

Due to the breakout debut of Gary Sanchez, McCann has seen less and less time behind the plate and has been used primarily in a DH role. Most likely, he would love to go back to the place he called home for so many seasons.

Anthony DeSclafani acquired by the New York Yankees in exchange for Chance Adams, Luis Torrens, and Hoy Jun Park.

This is one of the trades on the list that includes much of the lesser known pieces around baseball. Anthony DeSclafani is a starting pitcher for the Reds who has seemingly found success this season with an ERA of 2.93 in 17 starts.

According to Fangraphs, his fastball usually stays around 93 mph but can touch 95 on the radar gun. He also throws a nice slider, as well as a two-seam fastball with an occasional knuckle-curve.

The players the Reds would be receiving in the deal would be some of the top prospects in the Yankees farm system. Chance Adams is a starting pitcher ranked as their number 13 prospect, Luis Torrens is a catcher ranked number 16, and Hoy Jun Park is a shortstop ranked number 21.

As noted, the Reds would be receiving a pretty big haul of young prospects, which includes three of the Yankees top 30 prospects. With a team in full rebuild mode like the Reds, this group of prospects could be very beneficial to them heading into the future.
