Now that’s a debut. Antti Raanta, the new backup goalie for the New York Rangers, received his first start with the franchise and came away with the 4-0 shutout win over the mighty San Jose Sharks.
Raanta made 22 saves – some of the spectacular variety – on a night which saw Alain Vigneault’s new sparkling lines come through with a vengeance.

At least for one night the question of whether Raanta could replace Cam Talbot, last year’s regular season hero, was answered. Marc Staal, Mats Zuccarello, Jesper Fast, and Victor Stalberg were the scorers on the night.

Though he still remains goalless on the season, Rick Nash came to play tonight. Playing on a wing with Derek Stepan and Zuccarello, he picked up an assist and four shots on the night. He also came out with a little nastiness all of Rangerstown loves to see.

The victory hands the Sharks their second loss of the season, while the Rangers snapped a three-game losing skid. Their next test comes on Thursday in Arizona against the Coyotes.
