Former New York Giants safety, Tyler Sash was found dead on Tuesday. He was only 27-years-old.
He was 27-years-old.
The exact cause of Sash’s death is unknown, as the autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday. Although his death is under investigation, officials state that they do not suspect foul play.
Sash, 27, was a former Iowa Hawkeyes standout, and a member of the Super Bowl winning New York Giants in 2011.
Hawkeye fans may remember Sash for his record setting play as a member of the secondary, securing 13 career interceptions, and the school record for interception return yards.
Or they may remember one brilliant performance, back in 2009. Against rival Iowa State, three attempted passes found their way into Sash’s hands, propelling the Hawkeyes to a 35-3 victory, and later in the season, an Orange Bowl win.
Sash joined the Giants for the 2011 season, a sixth round pick out of Iowa. Playing all sixteen games on the playoff bound Giants, mostly on special teams, Sash experienced a rookie season to remember.
As the Giants continued to play in the postseason, so did Sash, playing all four postseason games, including Super Bowl XLVI, against the New England Patriots.
On that magical winter night in February, Sash joined his teammates on the field in jubilation, after the Giants defeated the Patriots 21-17. As confetti rained down on the field, and the Lombardi trophy was raised, Sash and his teammates became champions of the World.
The contributions made by each and every player on that team, the memories created by that bunch of underdogs, will remain in the hearts and minds of both Giants, and football fans alike, forever.
And for that, we as football fans, say thank you for the memories, Tyler.
Rest in peace.
