“They’re backups for a reason, and if they get a chance to play, they better prove themselves to be worthy of playing, regardless of who the person is.”
This was in reference to Geno Smith’s comments prior to the game. Smith has been very eager to speak out in the media about “getting his chance” to play.[sc name=”Jets Center Right” ]
It seems Bowles isn’t too eager or fond about Smith opening his mouth.
A visibly frustrated Geno was spotted on the sideline on Monday Night Football while Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Jets were struggling mightily. He did, indeed, receive his chance against the Arizona Cardinals, but promptly failed to see right edge pressure (fumbling) and throwing an interception after completing a few underneath passes against a prevent/loose Cards defense.
This entire situation is amusing. Entering 2015, Geno was the undoubted starter of the team. There was no quarterback decision or open competition to be had. Geno was the guy while the newcomer Fitzpatrick had to wait his turn.
A terrible leadership decision on Geno’s part involving IK Enemkpali, has changed everything. Fitz took his shot and ran with it, which appropriately placed him as the guy entering 2016.
Obviously, Bowles isn’t having fun with New York’s poor record of 1-5.
