The Jets are wishing to bring back wide receiver Breshad Perriman, who’s set to be a free agent when the new league year commences.

Breshad Perriman back in Florham Park next year and potentially beyond that?

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, it could indeed happen. Fowler reported Monday the Jets are looking to retain one of their top wideouts for at least the 2021 season.

It’s worth noting that earlier this offseason, Perriman expressed a desire to return to the Jets while appearing on CBS Sports Radio’s “The Zach Gelb Show.”

Perriman signed a one-year deal worth $6.5 million with New York prior to last season; it’s unclear what the details of a new contract would entail. Potentially another short-term deal for the veteran wideout who caught 30 balls for 505 yards and three touchdowns last season.

The Jets could certainly afford it, there’s no doubt there. Ahead of the free agency period, the organization possesses nearly $70 million in cap space.

Retaining Perriman on another cheap short-term deal would be beneficial for whoever the team decides is its starting quarterback moving forward. Whether the Jets roll the dice with Sam Darnold or draft Zach Wilson at No. 2 overall, the young signal-caller will need as much offensive assistance as possible in order to efficiently develop.

Alongside Jamison Crowder, Denzel Mims, and a possible free-agent acquisition, Perriman would continue to slot nicely into the roster and provide the eventual Jets starting quarterback with an extra passing-game target, something that would prove effective for their hopeful on-field improvement.

But regardless of which receivers the Jets employ next season, efficiency within the passing game must improve. Gang Green finished 31st in the league in passing yards per game last year.
