On this edition of the New York Jets Gang Green Report, we analyze Bryce Petty‘s survival and look at the new side of Muhammad Wilkerson.
It was a slow week for media members of the New York Jets leading up to Saturday night’s NFL Preseason Week 2 game against the Detroit Lions. So slow that many of the media members suddenly began to question Bryce Petty’s status as the team’s third-string quarterback.
Under who’s brilliant mind would the Jets ever carry just two QBs when one of them is named Josh McCown? I mean, the man is more talented at lying still for MRIs than he is throwing 30-plus yards.
McCown can only be counted as half a QB thanks to his injury history. Therefore, unless the Jets signed a free agent upon the release of Petty, there’d be very little reason to cut the kid while entering a lost season. In any event, the rumblings commenced.
Petty, though, would have none of it.
Against Detroit’s second-team, Petty completed 15-of-24 throws for 160 yards and a late-game interception. He moved calmly in the pocket and moved the Jets on their only two scoring drives of the night.
For now, it appears as though he’s saved himself from a possible cut to 53.
