Without Brandon Marshall and a QB, New York Jets Should Move on From Eric Decker

Reports have surfaced that the New York Jets may move on from Eric Decker. In this specific situation, they honestly should.
What’s the point in employing a 30-year-old veteran wide receiver coming off major season-ending shoulder surgery if there isn’t a real quarterback in-house?
According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, he wouldn’t be surprised if Decker isn’t on the roster when the 2017 season starts. This is not a report. There is no substantial evidence to suggest the Jets are moving on from Decker, either. This is simply one Jets writer thinking aloud during a mailbag session.[sc name=”Jets Center Right” ]
So don’t fret.
On the other hand, this really isn’t breaking news. The way Mike Maccagnan has conducted business this offseason could be the equivalent of a boss using his right index finger to push that big red reset button. Would anybody be surprised if a 30-year old WR is also part of that reset?
We all understand what Decker is. He’s a No. 2 wideout who, in theory, acts more like a tight end than explosive wideout. He’s a security blanket for the quarterback.
With Brandon Marshall gone, Decker loses much value. Quincy Enunwa and Robby Anderson aren’t ready to assume the top spot and Josh McCown won’t be any type of miracle worker.
Decker’s fate probably depends on what the Jets do in the draft. Should they go QB and snag, what they believe, to be the QB of the future, perhaps they keep the vet. If they don’t, and it becomes more clear that 2017 will be a major disaster, there’s no point in keeping him employed.
The depressing beat of the Jets offseason marches on.
