Sabo Radio 29 dives into the New York Jets initial 53-man roster while breaking down the team’s Week 1 matchup against the Buffalo Bills.

The entire New York Jets-loving world was rocked by the initial 53-man cutdown. With third-round pick Jachai Polite sent packing, the football universe was left with jaws dragging on the floor.

Adam Gase and Joe Douglas sent a clear message by selecting the players who will do exactly what’s asked of them along the way.

“That’s what we talked about since we really started this thing,” Gase said on Monday. “We talked about we wanted the best 53(-man roster) and that’s where we ended up going. We felt like that’s the roster we ended up with that was our best 53.

“I just think the body of work of kind of everything that we’ve done since we’ve been here, we felt like Kyle (Phillips) really earned his spot. That’s what we’re about. We’re about the guys that do it the way that we need it done. Best guys are going to make the team.”

In addition, the Jets remained heavy at the interior (10 offensive linemen, nine interior defensive linemen) while featuring a light quantity at the skilled spots (five wideouts).

Greg Dortch has been a major topic of conversation. After making the team initially, he’s eventually been placed on the practice squad after Braxton Berrios was signed.

Week 1 of the 2019 NFL season kicks off on Thursday when the Green Bay Packers visit the Chicago Bears. The Jets matchup against the Buffalo Bills features interesting individual matchups.

Quarterback Josh Allen helps Gregg Williams devise a gameplan that’ll put pressure on the Bills offense. It also favors the Jets defense that the Bills best wideout, Cole Beasley, plays out of the slot. Brian Poole, perhaps the Jets best corner, will follow Beasley all over the field.

Don’t expect too much from Le’Veon Bell and the Jets rushing attack. It’ll take time for the unit to gel with its stud running, especially considering his favorable results via the longer-developing plays.

Lastly, Adam Gase, if the rushing attack isn’t working against the Bills big boys up front, will allow Sam Darnold to win or lose the game.
