New York Giants rookies Dexter Lawrence and DeAndre Baker sign contracts

The New York Giants have given contracts to first-round selections defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence and cornerback DeAndre Baker.

The New York Giants have officially signed contracts with two of their first-round picks. On Friday, Big Blue gave contracts to defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence and cornerback DeAndre Baker.

The Giants chose Lawrence with the No. 17 overall pick in the draft out of Clemson. He’ll look to start on the defensive line along with B.J. Hill and Dalvin Tomlinson.

Those two only have three years of NFL experience combined. The line will be young, but all three players bring immense talent to the table.

Lawrence will also attempt to help the Giants with their pass rush, which was tied for 31st in sacks last season with 30 overall. The hope is that defensive coordinator James Bettcher will up the pressure on the quarterback in year two.

Lawrence only had 3.5 sacks over his last two seasons at Clemson. However, he did record 6.5 sacks during his freshman season.

Baker was selected No. 30 overall after the Giants traded back into the first round to take him out of Georgia. Baker will compete with Julian Love and Sam Beal for that weak-side cornerback spot.

The other first-round selection for the Giants was, of course, Daniel Jones. Jones will be the eventual successor to Eli Manning whenever he calls it quits. However, Giants head coach Pat Shurmur didn’t close the door on a possible position battle between those two.

By all accounts, the Giants have high expectations for their rookies in 2019.
