As we would expect, New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur can’t commit to Eli Manning for next season. No matter how good they may finish, it’s still a looming question and discussion.
Will he be the Big Blue quarterback at all after this season?
It’s set that Eli will start this Sunday against the Washington Redskins. The Giants aren’t yet mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. Therefore, it would make sense to still play Eli in order to win games.
He has played well in recent weeks, as Big Blue has won three of their last four games. They’re now 4-8 after starting 1-7 on the year.
However, the chances of making the playoffs are still a long shot. Many believe evaluating backup quarterback Kyle Lauletta would make sense as well. Again, it’s still a looming discussion.
On Tuesday, Shurmur spoke to WFAN’s Mike Francesa regarding this.
“Those are offseason discussions,” said Shurmur. “I’m really pleased with the way he’s been playing of late.”
Shurmur also mentioned it’s not just Eli. The players and weapons around him offensively have to put it all on the table as well.
“I’m fond of everything that Eli brings to the table. I’m fond of who he is as a person. I get a chance to see him behind the scenes, and I see how hard he works,” Shurmur mentioned. “And I know how hard he wants to win. But no matter what the talent level of the quarterback is, the team around him has to play well too.”

It’s been said before. If the two-time Super Bowl MVP is the best option at quarterback for the Giants in 2019, then keep him. Lauletta could be next up, but he may not be ready just yet to lead an NFL franchise.
