Former college quarterback Baker Mayfield says he’s not a bad boy and he’s not like Johnny Manziel.

Former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield arrived at Senior Bowl practice late on Tuesday. The reason? He was late because he had flown home because his mother had been hospitalized.

“My mom’s not doing great,” Mayfield told Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post. “Family first.Always. Doesn’t matter what the situation is. I would never put myself before my mom…Like I said family first.”

According to Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, a fan website questioned Mayfield’s reason for arriving late. It speculated that Mayfield was late to avoid being measured. The Heisman winner responded on Twitter.

“Showing up late? What would you do if your mom had gone to the hospital? Get outta here. Family before myself always,” he tweeted.

The former Oklahoma quarterback also said that he’s not like former NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel.

“Everyone wants to portray the bad boy, the Johnny Manziel stuff, but I love the game of football,” he said. “There’s no doubt about that. I’m an emotional player. I do anything it takes to win. I love being around my teammates and I love leading and having responsibility.”

Manziel had a reputation for being a bad boy. He partied a lot instead of focusing on football when he was in the NFL. Mayfield clearly isn’t like Manziel. The Oklahoma quarterback is focused on his football career, something Manziel wasn’t when he played.

It is unknown if Mayfield will play in the Senior Bowl. However, he wants to show NFL scouts who he really is. The Denver Broncos will be one team that will be looking at Mayfield. The New York Giants could also be looking at Mayfield to see if he could be Eli Manning’s replacement at some point.
