The New York Jets sign receiver Lucky Whitehead after the Dallas Cowboys waived him and after many suggested this actually may happen.
The New York Jets finally got lucky. They claimed Dallas Cowboys receiver Lucky Whitehead off of waivers on Wednesday.
The Cowboys had placed Whitehead on waivers after news broke that he had been charged with shoplifting in West Virginia in June. Whitehead said that he was innocent and the Prince William County Police department confirmed on Wednesday that he is innocent. The man who was arrested didn’t have identification but provided to police the name, date of birth, and social security number of Rodney Darnell Whitehead Jr., according to ESPN.
Lucky didn’t like that the Cowboys didn’t give him a chance to clear his name.
“Let’s not sugarcoat anything,” he told Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News. “I was pretty much being called a liar. As far as the whole situation went down, I was blindsided. I didn’t know about a warrant that came about in the first place. Clearly because I wasn’t the person arrested. The head person [in the Cowboys organization] I told, no one backed me up. No one had my back in the whole situation. I knew about it at what? 12:45. By 2:30 I’m released.”
Whitehead was with the Cowboys for two seasons. He had nine receptions and returned 44 punts for 305yards and 33 kickoffs for 846 yards. In addition to being a receiver, Whitehead could help the Jets out on kick returns. The Jets desperately need help with kick returns and that’s yet another reason why they signed Lucky.
