If not for the New York Giants, Tom Brady would be as decorated champion as Michael Jordan going six for six in championship games.
The New York Giants two Super Bowl victories over the last nine seasons are a permanent dent in the Bill Belichick Tom Brady legacy.
If the New England Patriots defeat the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI, Belichick and Brady will become the first head coach and quarterback to win five Super Bowls. This would make a stronger case than there is now, that they are the greatest coach and quarterback in NFL history.
Having two Super Bowl victories over the most successful head coach and quarterback duo in the Super Bowl era would only enhance the accomplishment of what Tom Coughlin and the Eli Manning led Giants.
Consider that both times the New York Giants faced the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl they were the underdogs. They were 12 point underdogs in Super Bowl XLII and 2.5-point underdogs in Super Bowl XLVI. Those games were up in the air until the final moments when the Giants, particularly Manning, were able to make the game winning plays.
Tom Brady admitted that these losses still haunt him to this day, especially Super Bowl XLII when the Giants ended the Patriots dreams of an undefeated season. The Giants 17-14 win in Super Bowl XLII will still be talked about 50 years from now. Not only is it considered one of the biggest upsets in sports history, but many consider it the greatest Super Bowl ever.
Coughlin and Manning are probably headed into the Hall of Fame as it stands right now. But as the Patriots continue to have sustained success each and every year having been the only ones to defeat them will make locks to make it to the Hall.
So although Giants fans may not like the Patriots or Tom Brady, they should still root for them to defeat the Falcons so that they can remain the only team to beat them in the Super Bowl.
If that’s not enough reasons to root for the Patriots, just remember before he was winning Super Bowls with the Patriots, Belichick was the defensive mastermind that helped lead the Giants to wins in Super Bowl XXI and XXV.
