Todd Bowles will wind up loving this game in the end. On one hand his New York Jets picked up the necessary 28-23 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars. On the other hand, he can now blast into his team for the ridiculously sloppy play he witnessed all afternoon.

Mistakes were plentiful on both sides of the ball.

In any event, a win is a win, and for the Jets, they’re now 5-3 at the midway point of the 2015 NFL season. Things looked great early after Gang Green took a 14-3 lead late into the second quarter. Both Eric Decker and Chris Ivory capped off touchdown drives in the first quarter.
Things seemed fine for New York until a big play happened before halftime came. With no safety over the top to help, Antonio Cromartie bit on a double-move and Blake Bortles hit Allen Hurns for a 30-yard TD pass with just 14-seconds remaining in the second quarter.

In the second half, both the Jags and Jets continued to not find room on the ground running it. In fact, the Jags finished with 98 yards rushing, while the Jets could amazingly only muster 29.

Chan Gailey’s run game was very predictable. He called too many first-down runs and Nick Mangold leaving the game in the first half also didn’t help matters.

Ryan Fitzpatrick needed to get the job done if the Jets had any designs on taking it. That’s exactly what he did. The Harvard grad threw for 272 yards, 2 TD and 0 INT on 21-of-34 passing. He had an opportunity to ice the game in the fourth quarter with this strike to Brandon Marshall:

It was possible thanks to the Jets defense coming up with this Blake Bortles turnover in the series prior:

Not only was the running game completely fouled up, but everything on the defensive side – aside from the coverage – was shaky. There will be a ton of film work Bowles just can’t wait to get to after this one.

With the win the Jets improve to 5-3. They’ll now get ready for Thursday night’s divisional matchup with Rex Ryan and the Bills.
