The New York Mets got their 2018 MLB draft started by selecting outfielder Jarred Kelenic with the sixth overall pick. Since the team has struggled mightily in recent weeks, the jokes were endless on Twitter. 

When times are tough for any particular team in the world of sports, it’s hard not to feel bad for the person (or people) who runs any official team social media account. The trolls are literally never-ending. The person in charge of the New York Mets‘ official Twitter account has gotten a taste of what that’s like lately.

After entering the month of May with 17-9 record, manager Mickey Callaway and his club currently sit at just 27-30. They’re well off the pace in the National League East and can thank the Miami Marlins for keeping last place occupied for the time being.

But with no game Monday and the MLB draft taking place, it’s a great opportunity for both the organization and fans to take a breath and think about the future. While the 2017 season was disappointing, it at least yielded New York the sixth overall pick, the highest they’ve picked in the first round since 2004.

With that selection, the Mets choose a high school outfielder in Jarred Kelenic.

As you can imagine, this was a prime opportunity for fans to poke fun at the team in some way, shape, or form. The comments to the above tweet were pure gold from top to bottom. It was hard, but here are 10 of our favorites.

We’ve got some light-hearted jabs in here and others that run a little deeper. Judging from how things have gone on the field over the past few weeks, it’s only right to expect a wide range of reactions.

Since Kelenic is coming straight out of high school, it’s probably going to be a number of years before Mets fans see if this kid can hack it in the big leagues. So once again, patience will be a virtue as he makes his way through the minors.
