Zion Williamson should go first overall in this year’s draft. His recent comments about the New York Knicks indicate a match made in heaven.

It’s no secret why the New York Knicks are tanking this season. They’re looking for an opportunity to grab a franchise player in the draft. That player is Duke University phenom, Zion Williamson.

He is a once in a generational talent. Williamson is gearing up to play North Dakota State University on Friday in the NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, he’s winning over New Yorkers by confirming his interest in the Knicks.

“I would love to play for the Knicks,” he said to Steve Serby of the New York Post.

“It’s an historic franchise,” Williamson responded when asked what he knows about the team.

Obviously, Williamson doesn’t have control over who will pick him first overall in the draft. But having a player of his caliber express interest in playing for Knicks is a huge deal.

Most stars in the past have spurned the Knicks to go elsewhere. Of course, Williamson has consistently said that he will be happy wherever he’s drafted, but Knicks fans can still celebrate this soundbite.

Having a player who wants to be in New York should be music to every Knicks’ fans ears. The Knicks are hoping to once again land the first overall pick. The last time the franchise had the top pick, the team selected Patrick Ewing in 1985.

Like Ewing, Williamson would also electrify Madison Square Garden, something that’s needed. He would also bring the franchise much needed hope and excitement going forward. Hopefully, the “embrace the tank” mantra that’s been the theme this season will pay off.
