The New York Knicks are preparing to make a big splash in free agency and some NBA insiders believe Kevin Durant is a realistic possibility.

Following the shocking Kristaps Porzingis trade, all eyes are on July 1 for the New York Knicks. With space for two max contracts, the Knicks are preparing to make a pitch to the best of the best. Kevin Durant is at the top of that list.

Although he’s in what would seem like a perfect situation with the Golden State Warriors. The superstar small forward has been tight-lipped about his future and has even resorted to running away from reporters rather than answering questions as Ethan Strauss of The Athletic details.

Furthermore, Strauss discusses the growing belief among some NBA insiders that Durant will spurn the dynastic Warriors for the Knicks.

“Let us be frank, with the caveat that the choice lives inside the head of one guy who can and does change his mind: Insiders around the league think Kevin Durant is leaving the Warriors for the Knicks,” Strauss writes. “Most people within the Warriors either think Durant is leaving or profess not to know one way or the other.”

As Strauss notes, the only person who truly knows what the future holds is Durant and even then, he could always change his mind before July.

The wild card here is the fact that Durant’s close personal friend, Royal Ivey, is an assistant coach on the Knicks. Moreover, Durant would be able to link up with another superstar in New York and that is likely to be one of a few places where he will have that luxury.

The Los Angeles Clippers are working to open up the necessary cap space to offer two max slots as well. But as of Feb. 6, New York is the only place where two superstar free agents can link up.

A lot can change before July 1, but there is growing speculation that the Knicks might actually land the biggest prize of free agency this summer.
