The New York Giants expect to use their franchise tag on safety Landon Collins if no long-term deal is made.
Good news coming out of New York for Giants fans who love their star safety.
According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the New York Giants are expected to franchise tag Landon Collins. This, of course, would be in the situation that no long-term contract extension is made.
Just last week, the Giants were listening to trade deals for the defensive back. However, they weren’t interested in making the trade once the deadline arrived. The Giants were reportedly looking for at least a second-round pick for Collins.
With the long-term signing of star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. in the offseason, this freed Big Blue to use their one tag on their star safety. He’s in the last year of his rookie deal in 2018, therefore the next offseason will be a time where Collins will be looking for a big payday. And as many would agree, he deserves the money.
A two-time Pro Bowler, Landon Collins has been a phenomenal talent ever since he stepped foot into the league. After being drafted in the second round of the 2015 NFL draft, Collins has racked up 112, 125 and 104 tackles in his first three seasons. Through half the regular season this year, he’s made 62 tackles, therefore on pace to approach his career-high mark.
If an extension isn’t finalized, Collins is definitely the one player the Giants should tag. He has enormous talent and is the “quarterback” of the Giants defense. With the trade of cornerback Eli Apple and the release of former starting free safety Darian Thompson, many fans would’ve disagreed with getting rid of another starting defensive back. Now that he remains a Giant, it should be an obligation to make sure Collins stays in New York for a very long time.
