New York Knicks: Billboard recruiting Kevin Durant pops up in NYC

New York Knicks fans are pulling out all the stops in an effort to recruit Kevin Durant to Madison Square Garden next season.

It’s officially billboard season in the NBA. New York Knicks fans were the first to strike and their target is none other than the Golden State Warriors’ Kevin Durant.

The billboard depicts Durant with Kristaps Porzingis and the Larry O’Brien Trophy. Imagine that?

It does feel a tad early for these billboards to start popping up, but the Warriors play their only game in Madison Square Garden on Friday so it’s the only opportunity Knicks fans will have to show Kevin Durant a New York welcome.

Durant is set to become a free agent in the offseason and many feel that he will look for a new opportunity — especially if the Warriors pull off the elusive three-peat.

So naturally, Knicks fans believe that Steve Mills and Scott Perry have the inside track to land the two-time NBA Finals MVP. But they don’t want to leave all the heavy lifting for the front office to do. Expect a raucous home crowd to show their appreciation for Durant and begin the process of wooing him to the Big Apple.

Whether it’s Durant or another big-time free agent like Klay Thompson or Kawhi Leonard, a major splash in 2019 free agency appears to be in the plans for the Knicks. With some deft roster maneuvering, they will have enough space to sign a max contract. Adding a superstar to a team with Kristaps Porzingis and a talented young corps is the dream scenario for fans right now.

Will Durant decide to take his talents to New York and bring a title back to a city starving for a contender? Who knows? Free agency is so far away. But we do know that New Yorkers are going to be doing everything they can to try and make Durant feel right at home on Friday.
