Michael Conforto saves a run early for the New York Mets and Zack Wheeler with an absolutely stunning diving catch.
Michael Conforto is best known as a hitter, but the man is a natural in centerfield. Conforto is doing his best Juan Lagares impression here. Even better than the catch is the fact that he saved a run. Off the bat, this looked like an easy double with an RBI, but not on Conforto’s watch. Zack Wheeler owes him big time.
The Mets are looking to snap a three-game losing streak. They’re going to need more plays like this if they hope to knock off the Dodgers and get the season back on track.
Conforto is still looking to find his swing this year. After returning from injury earlier than initially expected, he hasn’t looked like the same player. Entering Friday’s game, Conforto was slashing .231/.354/.394 while only driving in 23 runs.
It’s taken Conforto some time to get going at the plate, but the kids still got it in the field.
But even Conforto couldn’t save Wheeler when Cody Bellinger hit an absolute moonshot to the upper deck. The grand slam blew open a previously scoreless game.

The Mets bats woke up in the past week in Arizona and Colorado, but the Bellinger bomb was too much to overcome tonight. The Mets drop their fourth straight game. New York is now at a paltry 4-15 in the month of June and they look like one of the worst teams in baseball despite having guys like Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard in the rotation. That’s inexcusable.
The Mets look to bounce back Saturday night when deGrom takes the bump against Clayton Kershaw, who will be making his second start since May 1 due to injury.
