Lamont Peterson won the WBA welterweight championship with a unanimous decision victory over David Avanesyan Saturday night.
Lamont Peterson returned from a 15-month layoff to win a unanimous decision over WBA welterweight champion David Avanesyan. Official scorecards were 115-113, 116-112 and 116-112. I scored it 117-111 for Peterson. With the win, Peterson is now a two-weight world champion.
Peterson (35-3-1, 17 KOs) made the fight closer than it had to be by standing his ground with Avanesyan, but his work to the body told over time. He had Avanesyan on the defensive every time he looked downstairs, eventually lifting his leg off the canvas when Peterson scored.
Peterson will now set his sights on the winner of next month’s welterweight clash in Brooklyn between Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman. Many feel Peterson was robbed on the scorecards against Garcia when the two met in 2015.
Adrien Broner, another possible opponent for Peterson, takes on Adrian Granados, later on tonight.
