Team USA has enjoyed some great moments in sports history, but today was not one of them. In the meantime, let’s take a look back at 1996.

Team USA is not exactly playing their best hockey in their opening 2016 World Cup game against Team Europe.

In an effort to ease the frustration, let’s take a look back at what was probably USA Hockey’s greatest moment in World Cup history.

The year was 1996 and names like Gretzky, Messier, Richter, Lindros, and Sakic were all in their prime.

While 1996 was certainly no 1980, Team USA was an obvious underdog going into the final game of the tournament. To add insult to injury, the game was being played in Montreal at the Bell Centre (formerly known as the Molson Centre).

The game had a little bit of everything. Tough play, questionable goals, and even a Mike Eruzione moment.

If you need a break from what was an ugly showing by today’s Team USA, enjoy this video for old-time’s sake.

I've been a die hard Rangers and Giants fan for as long as I can remember. I enjoy sharing opinions, and hearing from fans that love their teams just as much as I do. Henrik Lundqvist makes all of us look like mere mortals. E-mail me at: Chris.Wengert@elitesportsny.com
