Mike Maccagnan and the New York Jets cut 11 players today and placed Devin Smith on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list.
Just one day after the New York Jets came out on the short end of the Snoopy Bowl – 21-20 against the New York Giants – moves were made.
Mike Maccagnan and company cut 11 players, moving closer to that final 53-man roster:
- Jesse Davis, OL
- Kyle Friend, C
- Jarvis Harrison, G
- Deion Barnes, LB
- Shelby Harris, DT
- Helva Matungulu, DE
- Lache Seastrunk, RB
- Terry Williams, RB
- Kyle Williams, WR
- Jason Vander Laan, TE
- Ross Martin, K
The top cuts include Deion Barnes, a 2015 undrafted free agent from Penn State, veteran receiver and returner Kyle Williams, and rookie placekicker Ross Martin, who was supposed to come in and push Nick Folk. Martin, as we know, disappointed greatly early in August. He finished the preseason 4-for-6 including a 55-yarder against the Giants on Saturday night.
The other piece of news surrounds second-year receiver Devin Smith. Smith, who tore his ACL late last season, was placed on the PUP list and will not be eligible to play or practice with the club until Week 7 of the regular season.

At this point, the top question surrounding the race to 53 has remained status-quo.
We said the Jets would keep four quarterbacks months ago (instead of going the traditional route of three signal callers). Nobody expected Geno Smith or Bryce Petty to be cut at this point, but due to the shakiness of play at the position against the Giants, keeping four seems like the probable conclusion.
The deadline for cutting down to 75 players remains 4 p.m. ET on Aug. 30. New York currently sits with a roster of 78 after these 11 were sent home with a pink slip.
