After openly flirting with the best free agent left on the board in Ndamukong Suh, the New York Jets have rescinded their offer on the prized defensive stud.
It was interesting the team even expressed interest in Suh to be honest because it went against the team’s apparent philosophy in free agency. All the players the Jets signed are in their 20’s and coming off of their rookie contracts. Plus, they all seemed to be really good character players as well.
Suh is neither of those things, as the 31-year-old has been a problem child throughout his career. There are too many incidents to list, but it’s safe to say he’s got a Sheldon Richardson-type personality. Maybe even worse.
But on the other side, it’s not just that the Jets entered the Suh sweepstakes. They came in swinging big money, as it was reported they had the ‘biggest offer’ on the table.
The bigger news is how this all came about. It’s extremely odd that the owner made the announcement.
There are multiple reports and rumors out there that seem to clash with each other.
Could it be another reason? Like acting owner Christopher Johnson itching to flex his muscles a little bit?
It’s never a good sign when ownership gets involved in personnel decisions. This one I have no beef with, but if this becomes the norm, that’s not a good look. Unless you like the look of a circus in Gotham, that is.
And what does this say for the regime of Mike Maccagnan and Todd Bowles?
They were both just handed extensions that will keep them together through 2020, but it sure looks like their boss just undermined their authority.
Now it appears the Jets will likely fill the void on the defensive line, created by Muhammad Wilkerson’s departure, through the 2018 NFL Draft.
