Just when you thought the New York Giants season couldn’t get any worse, they went out and lost to the previously winless 49ers, 31-21.
The game wasn’t as close as the final score would indicate as the Giants scored on an Eli Manning to Roger Lewis14-yard touchdown reception which was followed by an Orleans Darkwa two-point conversion on a run with just 1:02 remaining in the game.
Once again the Giants were beaten in all three phases of the game, as the 49ers showed more heart and effort.
San Francisco had a season-high in total yards (474) and rushing yards (186). The Giants tackling was atrocious all game, which showed the lack of effort they put forth.
Janoris Jenkins, who made his return after a one-game suspension, was beaten deep by Marquise Goodwin for an 83-yard touchdown in the second quarter that put the 49ers in front 10-6.
Despite the return of Olivier Vernon, the defense failed to record a sack for a second straight week. Due to this, rookie quarterback C.J. Beathard had the best game of his young career. He completed 19-of-25 passes for 288 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, and had a quarterback rating of 123.4.
The Giants offensive line struggled mightily as they gave up three sacks and left Eli Manning scrambling for his life at times. Manning finished the game completing 28-of-37 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns. He did have a costly fumble in the second quarter when the Giants had a second-and-four from the 49ers 22-yard line and were up 6-3.
That fumble ended a scoring opportunity that could have put up the Giants by double digits and command of the game. Instead, the 49ers would score just 3 plays later on the touchdown by Goodwin.
For the fourth straight game, Aldrick Rosas missed a field goal. This miss was from 34 yards in the third quarter that would have cut the Giants deficit to 17-16.
The only bright spots in this humiliating loss were that Sterling Shepard set a career high with 11 receptions for 142 yards and that Evan Engram scored a touchdown in his fourth consecutive game.
Other than that, it was a miserable day for Big Blue.
The 49ers outgained the Giants 474 to 374 and, despite being winless heading into the game, played with hunger and pride. If the Giants are honest with themselves, they would have to admit that they did not show hunger or pride on Sunday.

At 1-8 the Giants are off to their worst start since 1980.
What’s worse than the Giants record is the lack of effort that we see week in and week out. There’s simply too much talent on this team to get embarrassed by the lowly 49ers.
Last season the Giants secondary, which had three players make the first or second All-Pro team in Jenkins, Landon Collins, and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was called the best secondary in football.
But after getting lit up by the Jared Goffs and C.J. Beathards of the NFL, they now look like the worst secondary in football. What’s the difference between this year and last year? Last year, they put forth the effort and were disciplined with their assignments. This year, they’re not.
Last week, co-owner John Mara said the team will make a decision about Ben McAdoo’s future at the end of the season. But that was before this embarrassing 10 point loss to a winless team.
So changes could happen as soon as Monday if Giants ownership is finally fed up with what they’re seeing on the field.
