Will Tye is now a member of the New York Jets, less than 24 hours after he learned he was no longer a member of the New York Giants.
Sure, going from a presumptive playoff team to one that most believe will be historically bad might seem horrible for Will Tye on the surface. But it sure beats not having a spot in the NFL at all.
ESPN’s Field Yates was among the first to report that the New York Jets had been awarded Tye, who was waived by the New York Giants Saturday night, on waivers.
Tye isn’t going to come in and turn the Jets’ offense into a dynamic attack. But he immediately jumps to the top of the team’s depth chart at tight end, surpassing Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Eric Tomlinson and Jordan Leggett.
He’ll give Josh McCown an experienced, reliable target. Over two years with the Giants, Tye caught 90 passes for 859 yards and four touchdowns. He’s also a capable blocker, which will help the Jets’ running game and a mediocre offensive line keep McCown upright.
With the team’s recent additions of wide receiver Jermaine Kearse, and now Tye, Gang Green has added some much-needed experience and stability to its passing game.
