This is news all New York Jets fans don’t want to hear: an injury to their first round pick and future of the defense, Jamal Adams

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles informed reporters that first round pick Jamal Adams suffered a sprained ankle in practice today, according to Jets Insider Eric Allen.

Kimberly Jones of NFL.com added that the Jets have not scheduled an MRI yet. That is hopefully good news for the young safety.

The Jets drafted the highly touted safety sixth overall, and the hope is that he can lead the new era of the Jets secondary. He is so well regarded that Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks of NFL.com said he was the best prospect in the draft.

Adams is projected to be the starting strong safety this year. He is regarded as an in-the-box safety, as opposed to the ball hawk safety that frequently plays the free safety position.

There is never a good time to get injured, especially as a rookie, who generally need as many reps as possible to be prepared to start. But Adams will have a little over a month to recover in time for Week 1, and should hopefully be ready to go.

If Adams is forced to miss time during the regular season, Rontez Miles would probably be the starting strong safety, as he has experience in Bowles’ defense. He collected 31 tackles last season while forcing two fumbles.
