On this edition of the New York Jets Gang Green Report, we find out why middle linebacker Darron Lee changed his number from 50 to 58.

It’s safe to say entering year three of the Mike Maccagnan-Todd Bowles regime, there are major questions. We know a title contender isn’t on the horizon, but can real development unfold before our very eyes?

This is what real success will be measured upon in a few months.

One of these youngsters goes by the name of Darron Lee, the Jets first round pick from a couple drafts ago.

As a rookie, the kid disappointed greatly. By all accounts, he finished his first year as one of the lowest rated middle backers in the league despite the promise coming into his professional beginnings.

With David Harris gone, the gloves come off.

Most likely, Lee will wear the defensive radio and stay on the field for all three downs. His top asset, his speed, can be invaluable if he just maintains his gap discipline against the rush. Lee is hoping a change from the number 50 to 58 can get things started on the right foot, via Ethan Greenberg of newyorkjets.com.

“It’s just all of my numbers in my lifetime added up,” Lee revealed about the switch.

Lee wore No. 8 from the first time he buckled his chinstrap in pop warner to middle school. During his playing days at New Albany HS, the 6’1”, 232-pounder wore No. 2 as a freshman and No. 5 his junior year before he switched back to No. 8 senior year. Lastly, of course, the Ohio State product wore No. 43 for the Buckeyes.
