Now that defensive back Coty Sensabaugh has joined the New York Giants, an interesting rotation at cornerback could commence.
It wouldn’t be surprising for the average fan to conclude that the New York Giants’ cornerbacks have struggled this year. However, if you are more than the average fan, then you know that just isn’t the case. The defensive line’s struggles have been the cause of what looks like a struggling cornerbacks unit.The team decided to sign Coty Sensabaugh, even with the cornerbacks playing at a high-level. His struggles in L.A. led to the Rams cutting him, even after giving him a 3-yr/$15M contract this past offseason.
Sensabaugh is now teaming up with the man who he was supposed to replace, Janoris Jenkins. Of course, Jenkins left the Rams this past offseason to join the Giants.
Though the Giants’ have a good group of starting cornerbacks, depth is an issue. With Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in the backend of his career, it would be unfair to both DRC and the Giants to bank on him staying healthy all season. Thus, it is necessary to have reliable backup cornerbacks. Excluding Jenkins, DRC, and Eli Apple, the Giants’ backup cornerbacks include Leon Hall, Trevin Wade, and now, Sensabaugh.
Wade’s struggles are what led to the signing of Sensabaugh. Wade had an atrocious performance against the Vikings, and struggled again against the Packers. His playing time will be very limited, that is, if he remains on the roster.

Now that the Giants have the group of cornerbacks that they want, the key is utilizing them to the max. Jenkins should always be shadowing the opposing team’s top receiver. DRC is the starting nickel cornerback, which leaves Eli Apple covering whomever Jenkins is not covering.
The key here is to give DRC and Apple breaks by giving Hall and Sensabaugh playing time. Hall is a nickel cornerback, so he will slip right in to replace DRC at that spot. Meanwhile, Sensabaugh will replace Apple on his respective side of the field.
The Sensabaugh signing isn’t going to be the ultimate difference-maker for the Giants. However, Jerry Reese made a great move adding depth to a position that struggled tremendously last season.
