New York Knicks superfan John McEnroe jokingly asked Steve Kerr why he turned down his team and all the Warriors coach could do was laugh.

It’s been so long that we forget Phil Jackson’s original vision for the New York Knicks. With all that’s happened since Derek Fisher was named head coach in June of 2014 it’s to forget that the former point guard wasn’t Jackson’s first choice for the job. That was Steve Kerr.

Kerr turned down his former coach to take the Golden State Warriors job, and the rest is history. He’s helped build arguably the greatest teams in NBA history.

Safe to say Kerr made the right choice, but that didn’t stop Knicks superfan John McEnroe from asking the coach why he turned down his beloved team. While he was attending the U.S. Open on Wednesday, McEnroe ambushed Kerr while he was listening to the match as McEnroe was calling.

“Why’d you turn down the Knicks?” Of course, it was said in a joking tone, and Kerr laughed it off as he listened to the commentary through an earpiece in the stands.

The Knicks are 80-166 over the last three seasons, and the Warriors have won two of the last three NBA Finals.
