Kevin Shattenkirk is the newest member of the New York Rangers and at four years, Jeff Gorton looks like a genius. 

The New York Rangers revamped look was dramatically upgraded yesterday when the team signed Kevin Shattenkirk to a 4-year, $26.6 million contract. The hit against the salary cap annually is $6.65 million.

The New Rochelle native now gets to play for the team he grew up watching. The deal was initiated by the Shattenkirk camp, in what many around the NHL considered an unprecedented move, by contacting the Rangers with the contact offer.

The defenseman did have some other offer’s on the table but felt there were more important things to consider other than money and terms.

Lundqvist Now has His Backup.

The Rangers also announced they signed G Ondrej Pavelec to be the backup to Lundqvist. The deal is for one year at $1.3 million. Pavelec played eight games for the Winnipeg Jets last season with a 4-4 record.

The Rangers also announced the signings Cole Schneider and Paul Carey. Schneider has played four NHL games with the Buffalo Sabres and Carey played for the Hershey Bear last season. The Rangers will continue to round out the roster as they are still in need of a center.
