The first chance the New York Islanders had to show starting goaltender Jaroslav Halak wouldn’t be missed came on Wednesday night in Toronto. Unfortunately, though, the Isles came up short, falling to the Maple Leafs by a 4-3 count in a shootout.

Thomas Greiss stopped 32-of-35 shots he faced, but it was the last one, in the shootout, that cost him dearly.

Nikita Soshnikov had the only goal of the shootout, and it only came because William Nylander scored on the power-play with just 1:13 remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.

John Tavares (25), Nick Leddy (5) and Ryan Strome (8) were the goal scorers on the Isles side.
