Just when you thought the New York Rangers found their way out of a funk, they pulled themselves back in.

Cruising along with a commanding 4-1 lead late in the second period, Henrik Lundqivst and the Rangers defense suddenly flattened. The offense lifted their foot off the pedal and the Carolina Hurricanes scored once late in the period and then added another midway through the third to make a contest of it.

In the end, Lundqvist finished with 33 strong saves in helping the Blueshirts to a much needed 4-3 victory.

The win snapped a frustrating three-game losing streak, all of which came in regulation time.

3 Stars of the Game:

  1. Derick Brassard, NYR (1 G, 1 A)
  2. Elias Lindholm, CAR (1 A)
  3. Mats Zuccarello, NYR (1 G)

Early in the game Sam Rosen was busy belting out his classic “it’s a power play goal” line. Both Oscar Lindberg and Mats Zuccarello tallied first period power play goals. Dan Boyle, who was reinserted into the lineup tonight in favor of youngster Dylan McIlrath, assisted on Lindberg’s first career NHL power play goal.

Two other Rangers’ forwards who came to play where Chris Kreider and Derick Brassard.

Kreider picked up one of the softer goals you’ll ever witness, with Cam Ward feeling so frustrated he created an instant classic with his goalie stick break afterwards.

He was the lucky man to wear the Broadway Hat in the locker room.

Brassard earned No. 1 star status on the night for his seventh goal of the season, the Rangers fourth of the night, coming off a brilliant Kevin Hayes pass. He also picked up an assist earlier in the game.

One guy who didn’t have a stellar night was Cam Ward. Not only did he allow the Charmin Soft goal to Kreider, he was the culprit on what turned out to be the Rangers game-winning goal (turning the puck over at the blueline).

With the victory New York takes a one-point lead over the very formidable Washington Capitals in the Metropolitan Division. Next up will come those fun-loving New York Islanders on Wednesday night in Brooklyn.
