Addressing the media on Thursday, New York Mets GM Sandy Alderson was asked to update the status of Yoenis Cespedes, who has yet to fulfill the promise of the long-term contract the Mets rewarded him with. Does Alderson have any regrets?
There is no doubt that when the New York Mets traded for Yoenis Cespedes at the 2015 trading deadline he was the key cog in helping the team reach the World Series. The Mets went 35-21 after obtaining him, as he tortured opponents with 17 HR, 44 RBI and a .952 OPS.
After re-signing him to a one-year deal in the 2016 offseason, Cespedes again helped the Mets reach the postseason. There was a clear difference in the team without him in the lineup, as the team went 72-54 in his starts.
However, since signing him to a four-year, $110 million deal in the 2017 offseason, Cespedes and the Mets have not been the same, as lingering injuries have kept him from appearing consistently in the lineup.
Addressing the media on Thursday, Mets GM Sandy Alderson spoke about when Cespedes, who has been out since May 13 would return. The Mets have gone 8-10 in his absence. However, according to his comments, some like Mets beat writer for The Athletic Tim Britton and Newsday columnist David Lennon, are concerned that Alderson is having buyers’ remorse.
